iOS 12 is coming soon, here's how to prepare your device for the major update.
As with any update, whether it's on Windows 10, macOS or iOS, it's recommended that you back your device up, in case something goes wrong. It's also suggested you clean your device up. We're going to go through these processes.
Clean up your device
You will need at least 2GB of free storage to download iOS 12. If you don't have that, the update will not be able to install. You can start by going through the apps on your home screen - delete any you don't use at all, or frequently. You can always download them again afterwards.
Also open your Photos application and start from the top, going down, deleting any photos you don't want. Quickly select multiple photos by tapping 'Edit' at the top. Clear out your Recently Deleted album too. Tap the ALBUM button at the bottom, then BACK, scroll down to the album titled 'Recently Deleted' (it has a bin icon), and empty the folder.
Check your free storage
Go into Settings, then General and iPhone Storage. There will be recommendations on how to free up storage - delete message attachments, for example. Check your free storage at the top, you can also tap that to see what's specifically taking it up.
Back up your device through iCloud
First, go into Settings, tap your name at the top, then tap iCloud, the iCloud Storage. Tap Backups, and you can delete old backups here. If you have enough space in your iCloud (Apple gives a measly 5GB!), then you can back your iPhone up using it. Go into Settings, tap your name at the top, then tap iCloud. Scroll down to Backup (or iPhone backup). Tap the toggle to turn it on, then start the iCloud backup.
Back up your device through iTunes
First, open iTunes and connect your phone to your computer (Mac or Windows). Then, if a message comes up asking for your passcode, put it in and trust the computer. When your device appears in iTunes, click on it. Click the blue Backup Now button, and wait for it to finish. You now have a copy of your device's data on your computer for safe use. Visit Apple's Support page on doing this if you are stuck.
That's it! When iOS 12 is out, go into Settings, General and Software Update. Then install the update and wait.
