Apple has missed its deadline for the release of AirPower and is staying silent.
They are treating it like it's never been talked about or announced. But, in fact, Apple talked about it on stage at the iPhone 8 and X keynote in late 2017. Later on, they said the charging mat would be delayed, and it was revealed that overheating was happening.
Officially, now it's 2019, Apple has missed it's deadline. The company's SVP, Phil Schiller, said on stage at the keynote that it would be out in 2018.
We hope people love it, that it encourages others to create more advanced solutions based on technology like this. We’re going to be working with the Qi standards team to incorporate these benefits into the future of the standards to make wireless charging better for everyone. So look for the AirPower charger next year.
The AirPower charging mat would be able to charge an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time, safely. It stands out from other Qi-certified wireless chargers by being able to charge, for example, two iPhones at once.
The iPhone would also be able to display the battery percentages of all devices charging on the lock screen. When AirPower does, if, come out, we can expect to see an iOS update bringing that functionality.
At this time, Apple has provided no indication of pricing or availability of the mat. Additionally, no mention of the AirPod wireless charging case has been seen, and the previous mention from the iPhone X announcement has been removed.
