The Slack app icon has changed yet again in this latest update!
When the icon was completely revamped at the start of the year, it contained the Slack logo on a purple-shade background. With the most recent update, Slack have now changed that back to a white background (with the new logo).
Slack claims these changes have been made to allow an easier view of the notification badge (which is red on iOS). This has somewhat sparked outrage from users on Twitter who are complaining about Slack following the trend of using a coloured logo on a white background.
These seems to be a trend with modern apps and redesigns, and isn't a very good one. Every app blends in and looks very similar with other ones, and, none of them stand out.
In fact, one major developer who seems to be a follower of this trend, and maybe even the trendsetter, is Google. Nearly all of their iOS apps contain a white background, and with multiple similar ones installed, it is hard to differentiate.
Apple has actually implemented an API into recent versions of iOS that allows developers to provide users the option to select what app icon they prefer (READ MORE HERE) – a brilliant example of this is RetailBox (currently in testing), which has over 5 icons. If more developer could use this feature, it would be brilliant – and yes, I've seen many replies on Slack's Twitter stating the same.
Let's hope Slack provides us with more options to remove this boring white icon in the near future. For now, it looks like more icons are going the same. Every icon we included in the article thumbnail has a white background, too.
